Water Testing Information
How To Bring In A Sample For Water Testing
To get the most accurate results, bring in a small water sample (approx. 50–100ml) from your aquarium or pond in a clean, sealed container—such as a water bottle or test vial.
We recommend collecting the sample from the main display area, well away from filters, substrate, or surface bubbles to ensure it reflects the water your fish are living in.
Avoid using containers that have held soft drinks, soap, or food unless thoroughly rinsed, as residue can alter test results.
For best accuracy, bring your sample in within an hour or two of collection—especially if your tank has been showing signs of stress like cloudy water, algae growth, or unusual fish behaviour.
Still unsure? Just ask our team in-store and we’ll guide you through it!
Why is Water Testing Essential for Your Fish?
Water testing is essential for your fish because it helps maintain a healthy and stable aquatic environment. Fish are highly sensitive to changes in water quality, and even small imbalances can lead to stress, illness, or death.
1. Keeps Water Parameters in Check
Fish need specific water conditions to thrive. Regular testing helps you monitor key parameters like:
- Ammonia – toxic at any level.
- Nitrite – also toxic and indicates problems in the nitrogen cycle.
- Nitrate – less toxic, but high levels stress fish and promote algae.
- pH – affects how fish breathe and how toxins behave in water.
- GH & KH (Hardness & Alkalinity) – stabilise pH and affect overall health.
2. Prevents Fish Stress and Disease
Poor water quality is one of the biggest causes of disease in aquariums. Regular testing helps you catch imbalances early, preventing stress-related conditions like fin rot, ich, or even organ failure.
3. Supports a Balanced Nitrogen Cycle
New tanks go through a “cycling” process where beneficial bacteria establish themselves. Testing ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels helps you monitor this process and avoid deadly spikes.
4. Protects Your Investment
Fish, plants, and aquarium equipment can be costly. Regular testing ensures you’re not unknowingly creating harmful conditions that lead to sickness, replacements, or full tank resets.
5. Improves Long-Term Success
Whether you’re a beginner or experienced aquarist, consistent water testing leads to a more stable, thriving ecosystem. It takes the guesswork out of fishkeeping and helps you make informed adjustments to feeding, filtration, and maintenance routines
What We Test For (And Why It Matters)
We test for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, hardness (GH), and alkalinity (KH) because each plays a vital role in your aquarium’s health. Imbalances can stress fish, trigger disease, and disrupt the nitrogen cycle—regular testing helps prevent problems before they start.
